Applying to university isn’t just about filling in a form it’s about knowing when, how, and what to submit. In South Africa, every year thousands of students miss out on spots not because they weren’t smart but because they didn’t apply properly. Whether you’re rewriting your matric, applying with an adult certificate, or returning to studies after years out, this guide is for you.

Step 1: Know What You Want to Study (And Why)
Before you even touch an application form, ask yourself:
What field am I interested in?
What career path does this degree lead to?
Is this passion-driven, income-driven, or both?
🧠 Pro Tip: Use platforms like GoStudy or CareerPlanet to explore careers, required subjects, and earning potential.
Step 2: Choose the Right Institutions
Don’t apply randomly. Choose universities or colleges that offer:
The exact course you want
Reasonable entry requirements
Options for bridging or foundational study if needed
Flexibility for adult learners (distance learning, online options, part-time)
Top Institutions to Consider for 2025:
UNISA (Flexible and adult-friendly)
University of Johannesburg (Higher Certificate access)
TVET Colleges (Affordable + work-ready programs)
Boston City Campus (Good for adult students)
Step 3: Understand the Entry Requirements
Each program has its own entry level even within the same university. There’s a difference between applying for:
A Higher Certificate (needs basic NSC or NQF Level 4)
A Diploma (requires 4 subjects above 40%)
A Bachelor’s Degree (minimum APS of 21+, depends on institution)
📄 If you’re using Adult Matric (Senior Certificate – Amended), make sure the university accepts it. Most do but always double-check.
Step 4: Gather All the Required Documents
Get these ready ahead of time:
Certified copy of your ID
Final or most recent academic results
Proof of residence
Application fee (if required)
Motivation letter or personal statement (some courses require it)
Certified copy of parent/guardian ID (if under 21)
📝 Optional but helpful:
Reference letters
RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) portfolio if applying based on work experience
Step 5: Apply Online (and On Time)
Each institution has its own portal. Use it don’t email documents unless requested.
📅 Key Application Deadlines for 2025:
UCT & Wits: Usually close by 31 July
UNISA: Opens in September
TVET Colleges: Start applying between August and October
Private Colleges: Varies, but most take rolling applications
Late applications = lower chances of getting in or funding. Don’t risk it.
Step 6: Apply for NSFAS or Bursaries
If you need financial aid, don’t wait till you’re accepted. Apply to NSFAS the moment the application window opens (usually August to January).
Other bursaries to explore:
Funza Lushaka (Teaching)
NYDA
Feenix
Private sector scholarships (e.g., Vodacom, Sasol, Shoprite)
APEX offers bursary writing workshops – check the noticeboard or WhatsApp group
Step 7: Track Your Application and Follow Up
After applying, check your email weekly. Many universities will send follow-up forms, interviews, or additional requirements. Don’t miss them.
📲 Use your student portal login to check application status. Set reminders.
Step 8: Prep for Acceptance (or Rejection)
If accepted great! If waitlisted or rejected, don’t panic. You still have options:
Appeal the decision if you qualify
Apply to another institution
Do a Higher Certificate and bridge into your degree next year
Upgrade your results and apply next cycle (APEX can help)
Getting into university isn’t about being lucky it’s about being prepared. With the right info, mindset, and support, your application doesn’t have to be stressful or confusing. It’s a process and APEX is here to walk it with you.
